Guide to Freelancing

A popular series of posts to help with freelancing success:

Step 1: Research.
  1. Identify your market. Where do you want to see your name in print?
  2. Know the guidelines. What is the editor looking for and how can you make sure that you can provide it?
  3. Gather your resources. Find the people and publications that will help you to succeed.
Step 2: Write.
  1. Brainstorm. What are you going to write about?
  2. Start writing. Because there's no other way to start.
  3. Be Consistent. Sit down and write. Make the time to do it and then sit down and do it again. Repeat as necessary.
Step 3: Pitch.
  1. Set the tone. Don't be overly chatty or sarcastic or snarky or dry or loquacious or annoying. Be yourself.
  2. Know your audience. What is your editor looking for? You've done your research so this part should be easy.
  3. Perfect your pitch. Use good grammar, proper form and be concise.
Handling Rejection.
  1. Remember it's not personal. They don't like your story, it doesn't mean they don't like you.
  2. Be open to suggestions. You might get published if you make some changes, so be open to hearing them.
  3. Keep Working. Don't let rejection discourage you. Keep writing, researching topics, moving forward, making submissions.
